Formed in 2022 as a “Maternity House” to provide temporary housing and support services to expectant homeless youth aged 16-22 in the Jackson, MS area. The Yellow House utilizes a Holistic Trauma Informed Care approach in order to help young expectant mothers make enduring, positive changes in their lives. The Program provides basic life necessities of housing, food and clothing, counseling, life skills, education and training in financial literacy, and parenting. This approach provides foundational building blocks for development, learning, and health throughout a person’s lifetime.
A recent study of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), found that children who experience trauma have long-term impacts to well-being and functioning. The cycle of violence, generational poverty and abuse, homelessness, substance abuse, incarceration, perpetration and victimization of violence are all related to ACE’s. Strategies such as identification and assessment, reducing risk and exposure and nurturing resiliency and skill building are effective interventions.
The staff, partners, and volunteers provide comprehensive, wraparound services that support and guide the mothers in developing future behaviors and norms that build social capital and individual skills to succeed. The Yellow House operates within the Capital of Mississippi (Jackson). Each day, many young expectant mothers contact the program for assistance.
The Yellow House utilizes the intake process to gather current demographic information and psychosocial assessments to assess for individual needs and determine an individualized service plan for each participant. Expectant mothers are assessed within 72 hours of engagement. There are a variety of services and programs available to participants to assist them in preparing for a healthy birth process and future success. Appropriate models are leveraged by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) to assess childhood experiences and environmental factors that contribute to overall mental and physical health. The participants are reassessed as needed to determine additional needs and services throughout their stay.
